Red Sox 3, Braves 0

The pitching matchup lived up to its hype. Josh Beckett outdueled Derek Lowe for a 3-0 Boston win and evened the series.

The two teams remained scoreless through four, but the Red Sox broke the tie in the fifth when Nick Green doubled in a run following a fly ball that was dropped by Nate McLouth. They added another run in the sixth on an RBI single by Kevin Youkilis, and a third run in the seventh on a fielder's choice by Dustin Pedroia that brought home a run.

Derek Lowe: L (7-5), 6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, BB, 2 K

Lowe allowed just one hit through four scoreless innings but fatigue apparently ate away at him from then on until he was removed after 6.1. He threw 110 pitches. I didn't expect such an early exit after seeing his first four innings but the pitch count got to him.

The Braves scattered five hits with no one recording a multi-hit game. The 2-5 hitters each had a hit but they never really threatened except the eighth inning, and Jeff Francoeur quickly put an end to that with a double play.

Notable Red Sox:
Josh Beckett: W (8-3), 9 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
Nick Green: 2-3, RBI

Notable Stat:
0 walks for Braves

Why Jeff Francoeur Sucks:
Killed the only threat with a DP just because he can.

Braves 8, Red Sox 2

The Braves took advantage of a struggling Daisuke Matsuzaka, pounding him for six runs in a 8-2 win.

Nate McLouth got the Braves going in the first with a leadoff homer on the first pitch. They eventually scored another run in the inning on a walk in run. McLouth and Yunel Escobar each drove in a run in the fourth. Garret Anderson and Casey Kotchman each drove in a run in the fifth for a six-run lead.

The Red Sox scored their only two runs in the sixth on a two-run home run by Jason Bay. Kenshin Kawakami was able to finish the sixth but it was his last inning. Anderson drove in a run in the seventh and ninth to cap it.

Kenshin Kawakami: W (4-6), 6 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Peter Moylan, Rafael Soriano, Mike Gonzalez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K from each

Kawakami allowed just two hits in his six innings, and he actually had a one-hitter going into the sixth before giving up the homer to Bay. He did walk three but kept his pitch count down, sitting at 83 pitches after six. The pen's big three each had a perfect inning and each struck out two.

Garret Anderson: 3-3, 4 RBI
Nate McLouth: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI
Yunel Escobar: 2-5, RBI

Anderson drove in runs in every at bat, even with a walk in the first inning. The offense walked seven times and only struck out twice. The bottom three of Kotchman, Francoeur, and Johnson were the 0fers.

Notable Red Sox:
Daisuke Matsuzaka: L (1-5), 4 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
Jason Bay: 2-3, HR, 2 RBI

Notable Stat:
Boston's only two hits came from Bay.

Why Jeff Francoeur Sucks:
Another 0fer

6/19-6/21: Braves @ Red Sox Series Preview

The Braves enter the toughest stretch of games in Major League Baseball in perhaps the worst shape they've been in all season. The stretch begins with three at Fenway.

The Braves' last series win was the final series of May, winning two of three from the D-Backs. They are 6-9 in the month of June. They are coming off a series loss to the Orioles, though the last game of the series was a 7-0 win. The Braves sit at 31-34 are actually closer to first place than before their most recent series loss.

The Red Sox are cruising in first right now, sitting at 40-26. Their last series loss was early June against the Rangers, and they are 11-4 this month. They haven't had much trouble with fellow NL East opponents, taking two of three from the Phillies and Marlins.

(2009 stats followed by career stats vs. opposing team)
6/19 - 7:00
Kenshin Kawakami (3-6, 4.54)
vs.
Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-4, 7.55...1-0, 3.38 in 1 start)

As if it was meant to be, the two Japanese stars face off in the opening game of the series. Neither has been impressive this season, especially Matsuzaka, who hasn't had an ERA below 6.75 this season and hasn't even reached six innings in a start yet. Kawakami continues to cruise through no decisions, giving up two runs in five innings in his last start.

6/20 - 7:00
Derek Lowe (7-4, 4.08)
vs.
Josh Beckett (7-3, 4.15...6-7, 2.45 in 15 starts)

One of the biggest matchups of the season takes place on Saturday, with the two aces going at it. If Lowe's previous starts this season are any indication, his best stuff will be on display in this big game. Surprisingly, Lowe has never faced his former team. Old foe Beckett has had a similar season to Lowe thus far and he also struggled in his last start, giving up six runs to the Phillies. Both starters are looking to rebound.

6/21 - 1:30
Jair Jurrjens (5-5, 2.89)
vs.
Tim Wakefield (9-3, 4.39...3-4, 5.06 in 6 starts, 13 total games)

Another solid matchup goes down on Sunday, with the young hurler against the old knuckleballer. Jurrjens continues to earn tough losses despite keeping his ERA below three. He only threw two innings due to rain in his last start so he is plenty rested. The Red Sox have given Wakefield tremendous run support this season so Jurrjens must be on point.

Key Red Sox Relievers:
CL - Jonathan Papelbon (29 IP, 6 ER, 16 SV...5.1 IP, ER, 3 SV)
SU - Hideki Okajima (30 IP, 8 ER, 13 HLD...2 IP, 0 ER)
MR - Ramon Ramirez (32 IP, 7 ER, 8 HLD...3.1 IP, 0 ER)

Key Red Sox Hitters:
1B - Kevin Youkilis (.324, 12 HR, 39 RBI....333, 4 HR, 7 RBI in 12 games)
LF - Jason Bay (.278, 17 HR, 63 RBI....261, 3 HR, 16 RBI in 39 games)
3B - Mike Lowell (.291, 10 HR, 41 RBI....276, 14 HR, 69 RBI in 111 games)

Red Sox Injuries:
SS - Jed Lowrie (15-day, wrist sprain)
SP - John Smoltz (15-day, shoulder surgery)
RP - Miguel Gonzalez (60-day, elbow surgery)

Braves 7, Reds 0

If only the Braves could play every game like they were trying to avoid a sweep. Tommy Hanson pitched six shutout innings and Nate McLouth drove in four as the Braves beat the Reds, 7-0.

The Braves got the scoring going in the second when Casey Kotchman sac flied a run in. Matt Diaz hit a solo homer in the fourth and McLouth hit a two-run shot in the fifth for a four-run lead.

Hanson helped his own cause with an RBI single in the sixth, his first major league hit and RBI. McLouth added a two-run single in the same inning for insurance.

Tommy Hanson: W (2-0), 6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
Peter Moylan, Mike Gonzalez, Rafael Soriano: Scoreless inning each

This is why Hanson is a top prospect. It definitely won't be the last time we see a line like this. The walks are still up but they'll work their way down as he progresses at the big level, just as he has at every level below. Bobby got the main relievers some work in the rout, including a scoreless inning from Gonzalez after a rough outing last night. Soriano struck out the side in the ninth.

Nate McLouth: 2-5, HR, 4 RBI
Matt Diaz: 2-4, HR
Casey Kotchman, Tommy Hanson: RBI each

Bobby finally put Kelly Johnson on the bench, starting Martin Prado in place. Prado went 1-3 and scored once. Please just keep Prado in the lineup.

Notable Reds:
Matt Maloney: L (0-2), 5.2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Notable Stat:
Tommy Hanson: 2-0. How is this possible with this offense?

Next Game:
6/19: @ Red Sox, 7:00 (Kenshin Kawakami vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka)
While I have written the Braves off this season, this coming stretch truly determines their chances. It is probably the toughest stretch of games for any team this year.

Reds 4, Braves 3

This game is a perfect example of the Braves' season. Javier Vazquez pitches a complete game four-hitter, makes two mistakes and is given another loss. The Reds took a second straight from the Braves, 4-3.

Jay Bruce hit a solo homer in the second to start the scoring, another result of that terrible stadium. Yunel Escobar put the Braves ahead in the third on a two-run home run. The big shot came in the fifth in the form of a three-run homer by Micah Owings, his third career home run against the Braves. A wild pitch scored a Braves run in the seventh but they were unable to tie it.

Javier Vazquez: L (4-6), 8 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

Nothing to say that the line doesn't already say.

Yunel Escobar: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI
Nate McLouth: 1-4, 2B, 2 R

Once again the Braves outhit the Reds but left a ton on base. They never really threatened except Jeff Francoeur reaching third on a two-base error and not scoring, and leaving the tying run on second to end the game. Kelly Johnson went 0-4 again but he's still a good hitter because he's selective.

Notable Reds:
Micah Owings: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K... HR, 3 RBI

Notable Stat:
Not a single Braves hitter struck out.

Why Jeff Francoeur Sucks:
He just does.

Next Game:
6/18: @ Reds, 12:30 (Tommy Hanson vs. Matt Maloney)

Q&A with Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove

Mark at Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove has asked me a few questions regarding Hanson, Medlen, Chipper, and Vazquez. After the rather...wrong prediction of Jordan Schafer the last time I answered his questions, I'm hoping I can turn it around with these answers. Check it out here and leave a comment.

Reds 7, Braves 2

I'm officially calling this a lost season. There's no way a team that looks this bad will ever amount to anything. The Braves helped end the Reds' four-game skid with a 7-2 loss.

Jair Jurrjens gave up one run in the first that ended up earning him the loss. After a rain delay, Jurrjens exited after two innings and gave way to Jeff Bennett, who allowed an RBI double to Laynce Nix in the third and an RBI groundout to Ramon Hernandez in the fifth.

Garret Anderson put the Braves on the board in the sixth with an RBI single and cut the lead to one in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Jeff Francoeur, but the Reds put it away in the eighth with four runs off Mike Gonzalez.

Jair Jurrjens: L (5-5), 2 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, K
Jeff Bennett: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
Mike Gonzalez: 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 0 ER

Jurrjens was tagged with another loss he didn't deserve. Bennett did what he does best, giving up a ton of hits and walks but managing to keep the runs at a halfway decent rate. Eric O' Flaherty rebounded from his terrible outing against the Orioles to pitch a perfect inning. Gonzalez came in as just a fresh reliever with the Braves down by a run in the eighth. He was knocked around pretty good, though it didn't help that Chipper committed an error.

Chipper Jones: 3-4, 2 R
Garret Anderson: 2-4, RBI
Brian McCann, Casey Kotchman: 2 hits each

Chipper woke up from his slump to record three hits, including a double, and score twice. Anderson had two hits and an RBI. The rest of the middle of the lineup, McCann and Kotchman, both had two hits. Francoeur picked up an RBI but grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to make sure he left me with something to pick on him about. Kelly Johnson went 0-4 but he's still good because he has a better OPS than Francoeur.

Notable Reds:
Laynce Nix: 3-5, 3 RBI

Notable Stat:
Braves 3-6 in lineup: 9-15, RBI

Why Jeff Francoeur Sucks:
GIDP with bases loaded

6/16-6/18: Braves @ Reds Series Preview

The Braves roll on with their mediocrity for another series, this time a three-game set with the Reds in Cincinnati.

The previous series with the Orioles began on a promising note after Tommy Hanson led the Braves to a 7-2 win in the opener and they led late into the second game. However, the bullpen fell apart and lost the second game, 8-4, and they didn't even have a chance in the third game, losing 11-2. Another series loss, yet still sit 6.5 games out.

The Reds aren't doing much better, having lost four in a row, including a sweep at the hands of the Royals. They were 2-4 in their recent road trip, sitting at 31-31 and three games out.

6/16 - 7:00
Jair Jurrjens (5-4, 2.85...0-0, 12.46 in 1 start)
vs.
Aaron Harang (5-6, 3.74...1-2, 3.48 in 5 starts)

6/17 - 7:00
Javier Vazquez (4-5, 3.31...4-2, 5.12 in 10 starts)
vs.
Micah Owings (3-7, 4.64...3-0, 2.70 in 3 starts)

6/18 - 12:30
Tommy Hanson (1-0, 6.17)
vs.
Matt Maloney (0-1, 4.50)

Key Reds Relievers:
CL - Francisco Cordero (27 IP, 6 ER, 15 SV...14 IP, 4 ER, 4 SV)
SU - Arthur Rhodes (21.2 IP, 4 ER, 10 HLD...13.2 IP, 2 ER, 5 HLD)
MR - David Weathers (21.2 IP, 6 ER, 8 HLD...94.2 IP, 42 ER, 11 HLD)

Key Reds Hitters:

RF - Jay Bruce (.213, 15 HR, 32 RBI....609, 4 HR, 8 RBI in 6 games)
C - Ramon Hernandez (.248, 5 HR, 25 RBI....306, HR, 9 RBI in 16 games)

3B - Edwin Encarnacion (15-day, wrist fracture)

Orioles 11, Braves 2

This isn't even worth recapping. Derek Lowe and Kris Medlen both got bombed and the offense didn't show up due to it, leading to a series loss to the Orioles.

Derek Lowe: L (7-4), 2.1 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
Kris Medlen: 4 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 3 K

Derek Lowe never got it going today, walking the first two batters he faced and ending up allowing seven runs in only 2.1 innings. Kris Medlen did not fare much better, giving up four runs and walking five in four innings. Manny Acosta was solid behind Medlen.

David Ross: 2-2, 2 HR

The offense picked up a total of five hits. David Ross didn't even start, yet had two of the five hits and went deep twice. Chipper Jones is now 0-21. Yunel Escobar was benched after half-assing a double play relay in the first and not realizing he needed to throw the ball home when the guy was running home on the rundown. Why do you think such a smart runner as Brian Roberts would get caught in a rundown when a runner is on third? Think about what you're doing, Yunel.

Notable Orioles:
Brad Bergesen: W (4-2), 9 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Ty Wigginton: 3-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI
Robert Andino: 2-4, 3 RBI

Notable Stat:
Kelly Johnson is hitting .238 and still plays everyday. Please hurry back, Omar.

Why Jeff Francoeur Doesn't Deserve a Job:
0-3, saw eight pitches

Next Game:
6/16: @ Reds, 7:00 (Jair Jurrjens vs. Aaron Harang)
