Tommy Hanson reached 20.1 consecutive scoreless innings with six shutout innings against the Red Sox today, helping the Braves salvage a win, 2-1.
The two Braves runs came on solo homers by Chipper Jones and Garret Anderson early on. They remained on top by two until the ninth, when Jason Varitek was able to drive in a run after a defensive miscue by the Braves kept the inning alive.
Tommy Hanson: W (4-0), 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Eric O' Flaherty, Peter Moylan: Combined for scoreless 7th
Rafael Soriano: 1 IP, K
Mike Gonzalez: S (9), 1 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 K
Hanson gave up just two hits in six shutout innings despite battling the flu bug. He only walked two but only struck out two, both lows for him as a Brave so far. He had a no-hitter through 3.2 innings before Jason Bay blooped a single. Gonzalez gave up a hit but was able to induce a double play groundball; however, Kelly Johnson decided to chase the leading runner around instead and allowed him to get back to first. This led to a run scoring, but Gonzalez shut the door with a strikeout of Jacoby Ellsbury.
Garret Anderson: 2-4, HR
Chipper Jones: HR
The Braves scattered six hits and two runs on the home runs. Johnson started over Martin Prado and had another hitless game. Gregor Blanco got a second straight start in center and went 0-4, though he did see a ton of pitches from the leadoff spot.
Notable Red Sox:
Brad Penny: L (6-3), 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Jason Varitek: 2-3, RBI
Notable Stat:
RISP: 0-10. The Braves didn't record a single hit w/RISP in the series.
Why Jeff Francoeur Sucks:
Ran into an out between 2B and 3B when a grounder was hit to shortstop. Cost the Braves a run. Another Little League rule Francoeur didn't learn.
Next Game:
6/30: Phillies, 7:00 (Joe Blanton vs. Derek Lowe)
